Acer Aspire 5536-5142

Ordered this laptop the Acer Aspire 5536-5142 from Newegg last week. It came in today, took couple days due to weekend and all. But today I got the laptop plus my wireless linksys router came in also to let me connect the laptop online by wireless.

For the price is was a great deal at the time of this post the price on the laptop was originally $599.99 but newegg is offering $150.00 off and free shipping on top of that making this laptop a wondering deal at $449.99.

It does not come with any install or recovery discs but I was aware of that by doing little research online. But a tip I found was to have some blank DVD's ready because you will make your own recovery discs and application/driver disc. Total discs required for this laptop straight out of the box was 3 for the Acer recovery and 1 for application & driver disc. Using Acer's Erecovery program it's very simple to start up it will offer 2 option a system recovery or application & drivers. Of course you will probably do both. The system recovery used 3 blank dvd's and 1 for the driver disc.

The laptop itself is very nice looking, has a gloss finish on the case and screen. I would have preferred a matte finish on the screen, but it's not too bad although I haven't tested it outside in brighter conditions just yet. The pc itself is really nice and responsive. For what I would label a medium level laptop it really does the job nicely.

Opening Windows Experience for the ratings, the ratings are not surprising for a mid level laptop. And with some tweaking/etc could probably squeeze some higher numbers.

Windows 7 Experience ratings after removing some "bloatware" and unnecessary programs running in the background. Was able to get a boost on the Processor score. Haven't done any video card tweaks as of yet.

Haven't done any real game testing just yet. I'll update as I get more information. It's not really a gaming laptop although searching youtube for this laptop and vid card I have seen some gaming such as left4dead and such being played on it. I did install Second Life but it was pretty laggy with it, stats only showed 15 frames per second but I haven't done any tweaking on things yet so I'll have to update that when I get to it.

Update: Thought I would update this post with little bit of gaming news. I have been able to play Eve Online on this laptop with great success. With graphic settings on low I get 40 to 50 frames per second while docked in station. And flying in space I get 40-70 frames per second. 70 frames per second topping out when doing mundane tasks such as mining. So far that is the only game I have installed on it.

Lewis Carroll - Jabberwocky

Little late for Halloween but thought I'd post the famous poem by Lewis Carroll

Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
